Senator Jim Bunning (R-Kentucky), having a flashback from his days standing alone on the pitcher’s mound for my beloved Philadelphia Phillies, threw a curve ball on Capitol Hill and blocked passage of the extension of the cash and insurance benefits for the unemployed on Friday.
The retiring Senator from Kentucky cussed out a senator at the plate, saying, “tough shit”, to Senator Jeff Merkley, (D-Oregon), and another senator in the batter’s box who criticized Bunning’s lone stance on the mound.”
Come Monday, the unemployed will no longer be able to apply for federal unemployment benefits or the COBRA health insurance subsidy.
Senator Jim Bunning held firmly onto the baseball, stating that if all senators could agree that the benefits are so important, then they should find a way to score runs to pay for them.
“If we can’t find some runs somewhere for a bill that everybody on this team supports, we will never win anything,” he said.
Jim Bunning is a beloved pitcher in the City of Philadelphia from his pitching days with the Phillies; now the rest of the country gets an idea why we boo and fight so much in the stands.
